A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi island in the early hours of Friday. At least 38 people have been reported to have been killed.

More than 600 residents of the Majene area had been injured and 15,000 have been displaced, according to the country’s National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB). Thousands of residents fled their homes to seek safety following the quake, which could be felt strongly for five to seven seconds and damaged at least 300 houses. Many people are still trapped under collapsed buildings, according to local search and rescue teams. The major hospital in Mamuju city has been flattened to the ground because fo the earthquake.

The country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysical agency, BMKG, warned that aftershocks could trigger a possible tsunami in the region as as well. Videos on social media showed residents fleeing to higher ground on motorcycles, and a child trapped under the rubble as people tried to remove debris with their bare hands.

The number of people affected is increasing as you read this. The people of Indonesia need our help. The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens on the Day of Judgement. And whoever helps ease a difficulty in the world, Allah will grant him ease from a difficulty in the world and in the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.” [Tirmidhi]
