Hidden hunger exists within our community and there are many urban poor and homeless people around us who cannot afford to buy food and eat on a daily basis. A proper meal with chicken or beef is a luxury and hard to come by on normal days. The pandemic made these meals even more a rare blessing.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Kuala Lumpur has recorded the highest number of homeless in Malaysia, with an increase of 50%. Most are the elderly and the immigrants affected by the partial lockdown and lost their jobs, forcing them to live on the streets.
One of them is Pak Cik Omar, a homeless whom we met during our hot meals distribution in Kuala Lumpur, and his story taught us a lot about gratitude. After losing his job as a security guard during the recent MCO, Pak Cik Omar (not his real name) could not afford to pay rent nor support himself anymore. This forced the 62 years old man to live at a bridge near Pudu station and the bridge has been his “home” for over a month now.
Despite the hardship, Pak Cik Omar faced his calamity with an open heart. Although he was living on the streets, he was really grateful that he does not live in hunger as there are many who cared about him and provided him with food. Pak Cik Omar is just one of the many lives that have been saved from hunger.
In collaboration with Cheritera Cafe, our TGIF-Thank God It’s Food project was born and we aim to fight hunger with one meal at a time, especially during this crucial moment. Every Friday, 150-200 packs of hot meals will be distributed to feed the forgotten and underserved individuals, such as the homeless, the orphans, and the urban poor. Our TGIF-Thank God It’s Food project has been running for 4 months and we have provided over 1000 meals to the homeless and orphans in the Klang Valley.
This Ramadan, share your blessings and make someone smile every Friday by providing them with comfort food! Your Ramadan infaq can feed the hungry with a nutritious meal so they do not have to live in hunger.
Donations to this campaign will feed thousands of forgotten, poor, homeless, orphans and urban poor this Ramadan.
Charity Right Malaysia provides food for chronically hungry people in some of the most hard to reach areas across the world with the sole objective to overcome hunger, starvation and its effects.
